Off course that London as always has plenty of cultural events but October is an especially exciting time to visit, as Frieze and a host of other art fairs take over the English capital. Plus, the opening of the Franklin Hotel gives sophisticated travellers an elegant new place to stay.
Downtown Design comes to the Dubai Design District at the end of the month, proving that there’s more to this city known for its extravagance than meets the eye.
Budapest will play host to an art fair and a photo fair, bringing some contemporary side to Hungary’s picturesque capital.

The fourth annual Downtown Design will take over the Dubai Design District October 25–28. The public will get to see the latest in furniture, lighting, carpets, accessories, and more by the likes of Fendi Casa, Georg Jensen, Lalique, and Ralph Lauren Home. Take some time to explore Alserkal Avenue, where you’ll find hip new cafés and galleries in former factories. Dubai is known for its select hotels, which come in a range of styles. For classic magnificence , you should book a room at the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, whose most expensive suite is decked out in gold and 30 types of marble. Art Market Budapest aims to be both global and local, with international artists and a particular focus on the Balkans. The fair coincides with Art Photo Budapest, with both taking place October 13–16, which increase some extra fuel to the city’s smouldering art scene. Going to the fairs is a great excuse to explore Hungary’s fascinating capital, with its charged history and buzzing contemporary life. Be sure to visit the thermal bathsGellért, Széchenyi, and Rudas are all great options. Absorb the nightlife in one of the city’s ruin pubs, where stylish locals sip beers in crumbling factories decked out with shabby-chic furniture. Crash at the intimate 11-room Brody House or the music-inspired Aria Hotel Budapest.
In its 11th year, ARTBO International Art Fair Bogotá is one of the most important art fairs in Latin America. The three-day fair, which will take place October 27–30, will gather 57 galleries from 29 cities around the world. In addition to the art scene, Bogotá’s hotel industry has been accelerating over the past few years. Case in point: the Four Seasons Hotel Casa Medina Bogotá, which opened last year in a contemplative restored 1940s building. Book a room there or at the sleek W Hotel, opened in 2014.
Korea Galleries Association will organise the 15th annual Korea International Art Fair, which takes place October 12–15. One of Asia’s leading art fairs, KIAF is especially attractive to collectors interested in contemporary Asian art. In town, visit the Seoul National Museum of Art, an architectural masterpiece by Rem Koolhaas. It’s far from the only architectural astonishing in South Korea’s capital. Shoppers with an eye for design will want to pay a visit to the Dior store by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Christian de Portzamparc and Peter Marino, which opened last year and features custom pieces by Korean and international artists.
