AD 100 designer Suzanne Kasler tell us it’s all about balance. So Be Fearless and Decorate Around Boldly Patterned Wallpaper.
A decade ago, few people were brave enough to venture beyond white and beige paint for their walls—never mind embracing a” noisy ” wallpaper. But over the past few years, people have started getting braver. “I’m seeing a huge resurgence of interest in wallpaper among my clients,” says Atlanta-based interior designer Suzanne Kasler. And she’s not just talking about subtle stripes but dramatic and color-splashed prints as well. A strong wallpaper pattern, though, calls for careful decorating decisions in the rest of a room. Here, the AD 100 designer explains how she creates balance in a space where the wall coverings aren’t shy.
Let the print control the attention
At this home on Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm, Kasler applied a hand-painted de Gournay wallpaper in the entryway, where there are few furnishings to compete with it. “The wallpaper sets the tone for the house,” says the designer, who wove the print’s shades of persimmon and blue throughout the residence’s other rooms.
Temper with earthy tones
While the rest of this Atlanta home was cover in neutrals, the pool house powder room presented “a great chance to do something fun and colourful,” says Kasler. She took a chance with a large-scale orange Holland & Sherry wallpaper, grounding the room with wood furnishings and a textured rug. “With a strong print like this, I wanted to keep the rest of the room simple and casual,” she says.
A patterned wallpaper can game well with other prints, as shown in this nautically inspired boys’ room in Maine. Kasler started with Serena & Lily’s herringbone-style Feather wallpaper and then layered on a striped rug and upholstery. “Because the wallpaper is a slightly smaller scale, it enabled us to bring in larger stripes without the prints competing,” she says.
So let’s all give a chance to this new trend that is Bold Patterned Wallpaper even sometimes you think that is too much to ask of our walls.
