The blogger, professional stylist, and author Emily Henderson shares her secrets for creating an easy, festive setting for the holidays.
What are some easy ways to style your home for a holiday party that don’t involve too much planning?
When you have kids, you tend to always make plans last minute. I like to have a couple of decorative pillows on hand that I can swap out depending on the season. Target’s Threshold Plaid Oversized Pillow and Threshold Red Moose Stitched Pillow add an instant festive note. Metallic ornaments are also great for styling your mantel or bar cart and can go back on the tree after the party is over. I also always like to have pretty serving trays around my house that I can style with holiday tabletop trees during the holiday season.
What’s the one accent that can make the biggest impact in a home?
I think mantel trim can really set the holiday tone. A star garland intertwined with a fresh eucalyptus garland is a pretty touch. Or opt for an artificial green garland with twinkle lights and pinecones.
If you’re not into the classic red-and-green look, what’s another good concept for a Christmas party?
I love a good winter-wonderland theme, with gold and silver ornaments on a tree and faux-fur home decor that can carry you through the winter months.
What are your tips for making food and drinks look as good as they taste when setting up a party?
Bar carts are my go-to because they’re both functional and stylish. For a party, they make a perfect appetizer and drink station in the corner of your dining or living room. Style the bar cart with green garland and an assortment of dew-drop lights, and you’ll have the perfect, elevated look!
What do you always do before you have guests over?
I like to have some food already out and extra seating around my living room. You have to be prepared for your guests to bring friends or family, so I keep assorted stools out in my living room that also double as decor.
If you’re having overnight guests, how do you prepare a guest bedroom for them?
I always try to lay a cozy throw blanket on their bed and keep extra bedding, pillows, and towels on a pretty stool in the room so the holiday cheer extends into the guest room. Stash an extra set of towels in the bathroom too, just in case.
