The designer has a passion for blending good craftsmanship with bold art in every interior he creates. When the New York–based architect and interior designer renovated an apartment in Edinburgh, Scotland, for a young professional couple, that happen to be his friends since college, it was no exception, and the recently completed project is a standout combination of the classic style and the contemporary design.
With large rooms and wealth of architectural details in the late-1800s neoclassical structure, Carretero instantly had a clear idea of how they wanted to use the space and the impression they wished to make.
“We wanted to create a very comfortable home that had some of the ‘wow’ factor we had seen in Juan’s previous projects while maintaining the character of the building,” says the husband.
To achieve the balance of tradition with modern design impact, Carretero incorporated new and antique pieces and also some family inheritance. “In Europe, you have sources for great new product lines, so that mix is what keeps things interesting and contemporary; nobody wants a period room,” he says.
While the trio collaborated on most decisions, Carretero confesses that to achieve his ultimate vision, he had to do a bit of convincing. “I did push their boundaries a little, with bolder colors and art, but I think they appreciated bringing a little bit of the New York sensibility they left behind when they moved to the U.K. The apartment feels like an extension of their personalities. Traditional but a lot of fun.” he says.
